--MOORE COUNTY--

Moore County and the Sandhills of North Carolina offer residents a diverse mix of natural beauty, a mild climate, good schools, excellent medical care and a great quality of life. World-class golf is only the beginning of the many diversions residents enjoy. The area's Scottish heritage and turn of the century villages such as Pinehurst, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Pinebluff and Wispering Pines make history and culture come alive with quaint homesteads, museums, studios and shops. In addition, the mild climate and longleaf pines lend themselves to outdoor fun, supporting many of the other passions of the local residents, such as gardens, horses, festivals, tennis and more.

Located halfway between New York and Florida and halfway between the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in Moore County, the Sandhills area is within a few hours drive of the metropolitan cities of Raleigh (the state capital) or Charlotte, the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean or the Appalachian Mountains. The area is readily accessible, as more than 50% of the country's population lives within 500 miles of the borders of North Carolina.

The area is home to some 76,000 residents who enjoy a diverse mix of communities and neighborhoods, most featuring golf courses and lakes. A wide variety of homes and prices are available from condominiums and townhouses to single-family homes and estates in gated communities. Horse properties and sites for custom development are also available.

The Sandhills has a year-round climate that is milder and drier than the surrounding areas of North Carolina as the result of a unique combination of sandy soil, its elevation (600 feet above sea level), and its protection from the plains by the Appalachian Mountains. The average temperature is 50 degrees, average humidity is 50%, and average rainfall is 50 inches per year. This area has a special longleaf pine ecosystem that features year round color in dogwoods, azaleas, camellias, and hollies.

The Moore County School System has 21 public schools. There are also three private schools offering classes for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Sandhills Community College provides two year courses in the college transfer program, one and two-year occupational educational courses, and a variety of practical and cultural courses in the division of continuing education. Many of the continuing education offerings are tuition free for senior citizens.

First Health of the Carolinas / Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst was recently named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country. It provides an unusual array of medical services rarely found in a community of this size. Its health and fitness center offers the most comprehensive and varied array of programs available in the area. The center offers an eight-lane indoor pool, strength training equipment, racquetball courts, aerobic studios, sauna/steam room, basketball/volleyball court, indoor cushioned walking/jogging track and child care service. This facility also provides a rehabilitation program for post cardiac surgery patients.

St. Joseph of the Pines currently provides long-term and personal care for the elderly, home health care and private duty nursing assistance, hospice services, adult day health care, child day care, affordable housing for senior adults, independent retirement living, family health care and an Alzheimer's Support Center.

There are a wide array of restaurant choices and dining experiences to suit any palette, appetite and budget, from a casual family eatery to a sophisticated dining room. Visitors will find most of the national chains, along with a good selection of steakhouses, seafood restaurants and international cuisine including Mexican, Italian, French, Chinese and Thai. Residents can choose to "do lunch" in a deli, pub or quaint tea room, many of which are located in or near shopping areas or can treat themselves to a real old-fashioned soda fountain treat (so appropriate since the founder of Pinehurst, James Tufts, was a soda fountain magnate).
